MAORI CHIEFS DEATH
ACCIDENT AT TE WHAITI CHARGED BY DEER A fatal accident befell one of the most highly respected Maori elders in the Te Whaiti district last Sunday whilst hunting in the bush with two young boys. He was Wiremu Wirihana, aged 70 years, a noted chief of the Papueru district. It is understood that deceased was killed when a deer charged him and knocked him over in the busfli. Two young boys, aged 8 and, 10 years respectively accompanied him. The body had to be carried, about four miles before, the Tc Whaiti settlement was; reached. Chief Wiremu Wirihana was noted throughout the ■ Bay of Plenty region and, had shown wonderful hospitality to both Maori and pakelia. He had a conversant knowledge of the. Rotorua district, where, it is believed he lived all his life, tie was recognised as an astute huntsman. He was twice married and leaves a large family to mourn his loss. An inquest into the cause of death will be held.
