WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WHAKATANIE The February meeting of the . Whakatano Women's Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on 2nd inst, when Mrs Steward presided over a fair attendance of members. A minute's silence, was observed as a mark of sympathy to members • recently bereaved. The president read a letter from a soldier overseas in appreciation of parcels sent by members and later in the meeting Mrs Sutcliffe also ' read similar letters. It was decided to continue as before with, tliis work and several members volunteered to bake for this object. Con-*, tributions -were requested for tiie , purchasing of articles, for these, parcels. Nominations for president resulted in Mrs being ly proposed fo.r a further term of • office. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for ithe day, and was followed by a most instructive talk by Miss Tong, Dental Clinic Nurse, on the care of young children's mouths for which Miss Tong was accorded a very hearty vote, of thanks, A spelling bee was won by Mrs Stewart's team, and created much merriment* During the afternoon the, president outlined suggestions by which the Institute should assist the Red Cross. Mrs Norman also: spoke of a recent visit she had received from Sister Lucas, recently returned from the Middle East. Mrs Miller and Mrs Mulholland delivered messages of thanks from, sick members for the flowers' and letters otf good wishes receivccl* at Xmas; time from the Institute. Results of competitions were:— Zinnias, Mrs: Stewart Mrs Zins'.i. • 2. SmocKing, Mrs Matthews 1. Beans, Mrs Clack 1; Mrs Mulholland 2. n MATATA MEETING The: Matata Women's Institute held its January meeting in the Parish Hall on Wednesday. Mrs H. Withy presided in the absence of the president, Mrs Magee, and; owing to it being holiday time; the gathering was aiot large, but a pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by those present. The meeting opened wil;.h the singing of "TXle to Friendship" and the aspirations were read by Mrs Caverhill, after which the routine - business was dealt with. Mrs Smith gave a demonstration on*smocking, the members being vorv interested. A handsome bowl was donated by Mrs Bag'.ey for the member growing the besfc crop of potatoes in connection with the Potato Competition but owing to all members not being present with their potatoes, the results could not be finalised and Were held over until the next meeting. A dainty afternoon tea was served? by Mrs Caverhill and; Mrs Ansell.
