GATHERING AT AWAKERI
PRIVATE WHITEMAN RETURNS lOn the 9tli February a large crowd assembled at the Awakeri Hall to welcome home Private Harold Whiteman who has been invalided home after service in the Middle East. Bright music was provided by the Rhythm Aces while Mr Coll MacDonald, chairman of the Farewell Committee, acted; as; M.C. The floor was in excellent, order and the programme) mainly old-time, proved very popular. Mrs T'. Fowell kindly played extras. Aa a result of the function a further sum lias been provided for the purchase of personal parcels fo>r all boys from the district who are serving overseas. Mr M. Claris was the speaker fo r the evening and in a very fitting speech he referred >to the good service that Private Whiteman had performed in Greece and; Crete. He said that there would be much that Private Whiteman would, want to forget about his: experiences! but that the people should; never forget what was owed to. the returning men. All must see to it that the neglect that servicemen suffered! last time was not, repeated again. On behalf of those present Mr Claris welcomed- the guest homo and presented to him a small tokerof their esteem. Private Whiteman in reply thanked all very much for their welcome and said that, when lie left for Wellington shortly he would 'lake away happy memories of Awakeri.
