THE MAORI RACE

Sir, —One of j'our recent issues contained a suggestion from Mr Brebner and I beg space to say how disgusted I am that a man in Mju Brebner's position could say that lie had given much serious thought to such a monstrous suggestion. Mr Brebner has children and so have I. Does he really thing it desirable (that his children should in the future marry Maoris to help-ab-sorb the Maori race or would he * leave , that to my children? Does he think that the right sort' of Maoris would thank him for the part of his suggestion which would quite openly encourage immorality in their tribes? Does Mr Brebner think that- the resultant half castes would be art acquisition to. our country. We all know that the tendency for half castes of any races is to haye all the weaknesses of both races. Possibly the. tendency for the , Maoris to' over populate the Palieha is a serious one but why did not Mr Brebner suggest giving that £100 to every young Pakeha couple who married *and, a further motherhood endowment and so make, motherhood easier and give our own young people encouragement to keep the cradles; full. Had Mr Brebner made that suggestion I. am sure, all right-thinking . people would have been with him instead of viewing his opinions with the disgust they feel afc pre-; sent. , Yours etc., ' ''OUTRAGED MOTHER.''
