PREVALENCE OF THEFT

SOME new light upon the theft question in Whakatane and district, was thrown by the remarks of Sergeant Farrell in the Police Court last week, when he laid the bulk of the blame upon the local Maoris. A glance at the Court records would seem to indicate that he was right,, and possibly the remedy he suggests—severer measures in future will be very necessary. On the other hand this epidemic of stealing, pilfering and other breaches usually accredited the Maoris but lends further weight to the 'BEACON'S' previous argument that something of a Maori parallel to the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. should be established in this town, a club to which young Maoris of both sexes could gravitate in their spare time and spend their hours in healthy relaxation such as writing, reading, games, gymnasium or hobbies. In this way they could be kept off the streets the only alternatives are the pubs, the pictures and the fish shops.
