A FEW HOME TRUTHS

THOUGH undoubtedly Major General Bell's visit to Ruatoki and his handling of the pertinent questions hurled', at him by the Maori spokesmen, made a very definite impression on the large Maori audience which filled the marae, it cannot be denied that most of the complaints raised were in themselves just and equitable. Maori officers fotf Maori Home Guardsmen, is a very natural slogan not difficult to understand. It was therefore particularly refreshing to hear Major General Bell's breezy reassurance on the point. Many of the other thrusts at the military organisation and its weaknesses, held more than a barb or two, particularly those from Sir Apirana Ngata. He made his points boldly and without fear of intimidation, voicing home truths that many a Pakeha is fully aware of, yet lacks the moral courage to raise a voice in protest against their perpetuation. The meeting however can only result in good, and must make for a fuller, better and completer understanding of the Maori viewpoint as it is affected with regard to the war effort.
