PETTY THEFT EPIDEMIC
THERE appears to be a growing number of complaints regarding petty thefts in Whakatane of late. Perhaps like most things these visitations occur in cycles and will die down in due course. In any case while they are in the process of execution the victims fail to see the joke and in many cases view the position very seriously. Clothing from lines have been removed from many homes, fruit has been stolen, tool sheds and store rooms broken into. In one case we have been informed of a family which had been visited regularly and deprived of clothing and linen running into many'pounds. Thefts of this nature point to the culprits being young and irresponsible children and if this is the case the blame shifts directly upon the parents for lack of control and actual dishonesty in permitting their children to be in possession of articles which they must know are not their own., We trust this article may act as a hint to such parents to use sterner measures than in the past.
