MANPOWER PROBLEMS

MAORIS CHANGE OCCUPATION

Emergency Maori Manpower Executives in various parts of the Auckland Province, have been "devoting attention to the position that has occurred in some essential industries where Maoris are employed, in an effort, to ensure that manpower is competent and reliable. Freezing works, timber mills and coalmines are all affected, and there have been cases reported of absenteeism causing hold-ups in production. Particularly lias this been the case just before and since the holiday season, it being stated that the higher wages obtainable, for shearing and harvesting, added to the fact that these tasks provided a welcome change of occupation, were responsible. It should be noted that Maori committees have power to impose, and. enforce the payment of fines for employees absenting themselves without authority. lin the King Country and Taupo areas sawmills are still short of men, but it is hoped, now the holiday season is over, that full staffs will be available to maintain and even increase production.
