Local and General

The Boys' Brand "That band has come on in a way that's a credit to the boys and their bandmaster," said a local business man at yesterday's gymkhana when listening to the playing of the Boys' Band under Mr W. Jarrett. His expression was merely a reflection of the general opinion of all present, particularly the visitors from Rotorua, who contended that the band was playing with a confidcnce and finish, worthy of many an adult band.. It was notable yesterday also that the boj's wore their uniform caps for the first time. This is Ave hope the initial step towards a complete uniform, not neeessarilj' elaborate but something which will 4 mark the membership and give the boys a regular appearance when playing together. Our congratulations. to them on yesterday's splendid effort —particularly for the spirited rendition of "Keep the Home Fires Burning."

Terrific Thunder Clap If by any stroke of . misfortune the horses at the gymkhana yesterday have even to face up to the artillery fire of modern warfare they certainly had their baptism Avhen the thunder storm passed over and the tremendous report of fclie thunderclap in the last heavy shower hurst overhead. It was surprising to note the general steadiness of the animals throughout the phenomena. E.P.S. Hospital Test The Hospital- section of the Whakalane E.P.S. unit, carried out a realistic emergency test last Wednesday evening. A' particularly pleasing feature was the number of V.A. workers who attended in full uniform. These capable young enthusiasts who have been trained by Mrs F. Prideaux were smart in their appearancc as well as in the carrying out of their duty, and earned the highest praise of those in charge of the test.

Who Is He ? A young hopeful not yet five years old astounded his parents yesterday when being dressed for Wha'katane's gala, by asking in an injured voice, "Who is this Jim Ivhana, anyway?" Farewell Committee Meeting A meeting of the Wliakatane and District Soldiers Farewell Committee takes place in the Borough Council Chambers at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow evening. Prior to the meeting two presentations will be made to men now on leave. Te Reo, Rangifcahi We have received two copies of the Rangitahi Native School magazine, printed by the pupils themselves under the supervision of their headmaster, Mr K. B. Mclellan, on a duplicator which was purchased as a result of funds raised, at a recent dance. The magazine is a crcditablc effort, reflecting something of the different branches; of all the varied school lifq, training arid instruction. We wish it all success and trust tliat it will lead, to further and. even larger editions. Faux Pas Broadcast Mr Wish Wina, Whakatane's well known 'wise cracker' excelled, himself yesterday as the official announcer.' Whether or not his frequent faux pas (and there' were quite a fund of them) were intentional or otherwise we have not been able to discover as they were usu-a ally followed up by a swift (a little 'too swift' to be genuine thought, our reporter) apology. We have in mind, the reference to the 'girl s'kites' and the devastating 'pardon' which only enlarged the laugh and the 'fluke' mixture of the weight' of the 'pig' in guessing competition and the aviodupoii of a certain well known Whakatam butcher.
