TRANSPORT CONTROL

THE technical victory of the appellants at last week's special sitting of the No. 1 Transport Licensing' Authority, is not likely under the pressing circumstances of the moment to remain a permanent protection for the parties concerned. Warning after warning as to the gravity of the petrol and tyre position has been poured into the public ear for months past, and if we are to believe the statistics released from time to time the serious nature of the present shortage must dictate,, more drastic and far-reaching measures in future. In view of all the circumstances and the continual warning springing from press and the honest opinion regarding the Co-ordinating Committees regulations, can only be that it was bent* on carrying out its duties to the letter and bringing home to the public of this district the urgency of the position. The. complete reversal of its decision by Mr E. J. Phelan can therefore at the most, be only regarded as a temporary offset to save undue dislocation, but it must be obvious to the protesting parties that as conditions deteriorate and the tyre shortage becomes more and more acute the facts will have to be faced again and possibly without the same favourable outcome to themselves.
