YEARLING BULL REALISED

850 GUINEAS

Sensational prices were paid at the annual Show and Sale of Aberdeen Angus cattle held under the auspices of the N.Z. Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders' Association at Dannevirke on October 14. The Mangatoro breed.er, Mr Donald G. Grant, who himself comes from the Spej'side, Scotland, had a sweeping success, winning all four first places in the Yearling Class, first for two-year-olds, the Championship, and he also succeeded in winning outright the Wright, Stephenson Challenge Cup for the best group of three bulls. The competiton for this cup has extended over 14 years. As herdsman fo.r the Gwavas Estate, Mr Grant, had won the Cup in 1931, 1932 and 1935 for this stud bui't by now winning it three times in succession himself the Cup becomes his property. Mr Grant's second prize yearling bull, Embassy 11th of Mangatoro, whose dam, a New Zealand bred cow, had Avon numerous prizes and Championships, created sensational competition and was finally sold at the record price for the Dominion of 850 guineas. The previous record price of 800 guineas was paid when two years! ago Mr Grant submitted another yearling bred in his stud in aid of the Patriotic Funds and it realised the then

record price of 800 guineas. A prominent Australian breeder as well as other New Zealand breeders competed rigorously for 'this outstanding animal which was submitted to auction on behalf of his breeder by Wright. Stephenson and Co. Ltd., in conjunction with the Hawke's Bay Farmers Co-op. Assn. Ltd. The former firm also sold for Mr Grant a non-prize winning bull in Embassy 12th of Mangatoro at the second highest price of 600 guineas, •the purchaser being Mir H. G. Dalby of Rovdon, Porangahau. The first prize bull, Embassy 9th of Mangatoro, was purchased by Mr Joseph "Webb of Taihape-for 470 guineas. His dam was the famous imported Champion cow, Perdita of Jardine. The five top yearlings from MiGrant's stud made the remarkable average of 523 guineas.! All were the progeny of his noted young imported and Champion sire, Mulben Embassy. Nine of his sons, and two of his daughters made the wo.nder« ful average of 344 guineas. Other individual prices paid for yearling bulls bred by Mr Grant were 370 guineas, 325 guineas, 275 guineas, and 250 guineas. In the two-year-old section Embassy 6th, also a bull of pure imported blood and which had headed his class, realised 280 guineas. This bull was also bought' by the East Coast Commissioner. The top price for two-year-olds, however, Avas secured by Mr L. A.i P. Sherriff of Taihape for Odin of Kowhiwhi. This low set, thick bull was purchased by Mr C. Matthews of Mangapapa, Gisborne, at 310 guineas. He was placed oth in an exceptionally big and strong class. His sire is the notable young breeding bull, Inculcate of Akitio, while his dam was bjr a famous aire in Acute of Akitio. The market throughout was exceptionally strong, many other breeders securing three figure prices, a total of over 10,000 guineas being distributed amongst the 20 contributing breeders. A number of heifers were also submitted, two daughters of Mr Grant's imported sire making 120 and 172% guineas. There was an unsatisfied demand for all good quality stock.
