WHAKATANE MEETING

Tlic October meeting of tlie Institute was held recently 'in the Methodist Hall, Mrs Stewart presiding over a large attendance of• members and. visitors. The occasion was the Institute birthday. Visitors were welcomed at the commencement by the president. The hall was charmingly arranged with long tables of flowers down the centre, and the effect was very incasing. A varied and Jjeautiful. display of eoppcr and pewter work completed by members, of the crafts class, was exhibited the articles ranging from bookends to firescreens. Also on display were papier mache Wishes for E.P.S. purposes, the small band, of workers liaving produced approximately 100 utensils. Another exhibit of interest was one of the 14 camouflage nets completed by members, seven being made Jjv Mrs Moream. During tlie afternoon Mrs Miller and Mirs N. Carter entertained with songs, which received enthusiastic applause tlie former rendering "On Wings of Song" and "'May Morning," and the latter "I'll Walk Beside You" and "131 ess This House." A general knowledge test was won l)y Mrs Kerr of Awakeri, A short play was enacted entitled "Tea Room," the cast including Mesilames Stewart, Norman, MurphySims and King. Mrs Buddie, first president of the Wlia'katane Institute, in a brief speech, congratulated the Institute on 'its present strength and activity, remarking that such growtli was due largely to successive hard working committees and presidents. Competitions were won as follows: Artificial posy, Mrs Stewart t; Mirs Print 2. Jug of flowers for effect, Mrs Hannah 1; Mrs Wheeler. Bowl of flowers for effect., Mrs Moran 1; Mrs Stewart 2. A dainty afternoon tea was partaken of and the birtlulay cake was cut by Mrs Buddie. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very enjoyable afternoon.
