POSITION OF FARMERS
lai the House last week Mr W. Sullivan (M.P. for Bay of Plenty), asked the Minister of Transport the following question:— "If Clause five of the Transport Control Emergency Regulations Serial No. 10-12-190 prohibits a farmer from transporting to or from sale a small number of pigs, in his own light truck or'trailer, and does the same clause prohibit a farmer from carting goods, required, for his own purpose in truck or trailer." He added that some transport committees had advised farmers that they may not carry their own stock in truck or trailer, although the farmer may proceed to the sale in his own truck or car. Hon. Minister of Transport replied: The regulations require that the farmer who -desires to transport by motor vehicle his live-stock, including pigs, must obtain the consent of tlie Goods Transport Control Committee appointed under the regulations. The committee has among its members representatives of the farmers, stock and station agents and meat exporters, who are specially co-opted for the purpose of considering matters relating to the transport of live-stock. The purpose of the regulations, of course, is the conservation of motor transport to the utmost degree, particularly in view of the tyre position, and in this respect the regulations replace the Stock Transport Control Regulations previously in force. The regulations do not therefore prohibit the farmer from carting his own goods (other than Live-stock) in a truck or trailer.
