COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING .-ssZXSX* BUILDING PERMIT REFUSED "My own opinion is that- there is a hideous conglomeration, of buildings going up at the en trance to the town," said His Worship the Mayor, at the Borough Council meeting when discussing the application of A. M. Bislcy and Co. for the right to erect a small smithy adjoining the present premises. 'Mi don't think the suggested building is going to improve it." The Council decided to refuse the application. Melville's Quarry Metal The Clerk reported that the owners were now agreeable to permitting the Council to fix the royalty to be charged for metal sold to any third party, the owners to receive half of the royalty received. A letter was received from the County Council enquiring the present position respecting the supply of metal for County requirements. After a brief discussion it was resolved to recommend that the Council charge royalty of Gd per yard on the sale of metal from -Melville's quarry, and that the County Council be advised of this. Transport Licensing A letter was before the Council from the Municipal and Counties Associations requesting nominations (2) from the local authorirties within the Whakatane Goods Transport Control District (viz, County and Borough Councils) for the appointment of one local body representative on the Policy Committee being appointed for the district. Nominations required to be in Wellington by October 8. The Town Clerk reported that the County had already nominated Mr H. C. McCready. It was resolved that the Borough Council nominate Cr. T. J. Cummings. Petrol Supplies! In answer to a request from Messrs. Wheeler's Garage for a share of the Council's petrol business it was decided that the Council obtain, its petrol supplies for three monthly periods from the following firms, in the following order (decided by lot) the requirements of the Foreman-Engineer re supply, and the Clerk re invoicing to be complied with : Brabant Bros. Ltd., S. K. Schofield, Mac Lean Motors Limited, Wheeler's Garage Ltd., and Armstrong and Co. Ltd. Miscellaneous In answer to an enquiry received from the Knox Tennis Club for the re-sealing by the Council of the two tennis courts in Knox Church grounds, it was resolved that as bitumen products are not. available the Council is not in the position to do the work, but that the request be reconsidered when material is available. An application of Mrs, Iv. A. Schofield r.e excessive water account, referred to tlie committee, was considered, and the Council decided, in the special circumstances( that the sum of £8 10s 3d be remitted, and that the obligations upon consumers to prevent water wastage be pointed out, also that it would not be possible for the Council to act similarly should like circumstances again arise. The Mayor' reported that. Messrs. Purden and McMahon had interviewed him respecting the Council's notice to fence the booundaries of their properties with the unformed street leading from James Street west to the Whakatane River. Tliey stated that wire was procurable, although expensive, but it was quite impossible to procure fencing posts, which statement they were able L<substantiate. The Council decided to defer action for six months, the position to be then reviewed. A communication from the County Council setting out the' position of the recent movement to lorm a Bay of Plenty Local Authorities. Association drew small comment from the meeting other than a passing remark from the Mayor, that in his opinion such an organisation could only prove a 'fruitful, source of argument.'
