GORSE AND BLACKBERRY

Sir, —As an occasional visitor to Whakatane, from the Waikato, I have been much impressed with the relative cleanness of the Bay of Plenty in respect of gorse and black- V berry. Many of your readers will know what these pests mean in the Waikato. On motoring through your district recently, however, I could not help noticing that clumps of gorse were showing on river bariks. May I venture to stress the peculiar ur-* gency of this problem in your dis- . tric.t, because it seems clear that a penny spent now will make ur*-% necessary, the spending of a pound in future years. With the peculiar _. liability of parts of the Bay, "to Hooding, it is obvious that gorse and blackberry need only to get a ™ :;mall footing in order to be spread by tloodwalcr, rapidly over the whole district. I am writing to you in the earnest hope that the problem will be tackled in its infancy—an which is not going to last far yond the present moment. Yours etc., DOUGLAS SEYMOUR. .

Sir,—lt was with interest that I read the comments of "A Rebel," in a recent issue of your paper. As he so truly says, it is indeed singular to find, a newspaper days that will give news impartially. M«y I wish your paper every success for the future. Yours etc.. A. ORMEL (We thank our correspondent for his unsolicited tribute and can sure him that just so long as ■we are privileged to remain a news organ it will be our endeavour ways to afford an unbiassed, and impartial hearing to all points of view as reflecting public opiniox*- . Ed.) ■
