LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
HOSPITAL MATRON'S ADDRESS
EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS
The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in Knox Presbyterian Hall on Tuesday last. The meeting was opened by the president, Mrs W. Sullivan, reading the Rules and Objects of the League. 1. To uphold the Sanctity of Marriage. 2. To help parents to realise the greatness of itheir responsibility and the power of their influence in forming the character of the child. 3. To establish a Fellowship of Mothers, who will strive for high ideals in the home and seek to lead their families in purity of life and steadfastness of character. The usual business was dealt with and a letter from the League's Mt. Albert branch was read, also a letter from our Scottish Link,, in Ruthwell Dumfries, which described the work and interests of the League members there. Miss Runciman, matron of our hospital, than gave an address on 'What to do in an Emergency,' and demonstrated the use of the latent "Emergency Kit." This consists of a sterilised piece of cloth, the size of a man's handkerchief, a triangular bandage, and a rubber strip, made from the tube of a bicycle tyre, used as a bandage. These, carried in a paper bag, can easily be carried in a man's inner pocket, in a - lady's overcoat pocket, or in a handbag. This kit has been adopted by the Red Cross Society and St. John's Ambulance of Britain, and has accordingly been adopted by our New Zealand Organisations. The speaker then recommended the right kind of food to store in a suitable place for emergency use. Carbo hydrates: .Biscuits.. Proteins: Tinned meat or fish: -dried milk. Vitamins: Tinned tomato juice. Treatment of burns, was the next, subject. All treatments Avith oil were to be abandoned. Burns were to be treated with-soda bicarb mixture ay here possible, and Miss Runciman recommended that every housewife keep a bottle, sterilised, ready for use. If however, this AYas no*:, available, the burn be treated with one of the preparations of tanic acid such as "Taanafax." Miss Runciman was heartily thanked for her address Avhich AYas greatly appreciated by all present. Airs J. Warner then sang two songs very pleasingly. Afternoon tea Avas served by two members of the committee, af'ler which the meeting closed with the National Anthem.
