COMPARATIVELY LIGHT

EXTENT OF FLOOD DAMAGE

'COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT

Mentioning the recent widespread Hooding on the Rangitaiki Plains in liis report to the County Council last Tuesday the engineer, Mr R. Tomkins, stated-:—

During the period under review, exceptional rainfall has, been experienced shid although no specific major damage was done, many smaller slips and washouts occurred. All rivers were in flood, the Rangitailu rising to the highest level since 1925, and overflowing its ban'ks at several points. • Some damage was caused to Station Road. This has been made good by the Lands Department dredge at comparatively small cost. Stanley, Wainui and To Teko-Galatea Roads suffered most from slips, most of which arc now cleared. A serious washout on the jVlinginui Road completely blocked that road to traffic for a few days, temporary repairs being first made by the settlers. The surfaces of most roads suffered to some extent, but are gradually being restored to failorder. Holes in Powell's, McCracken's, Awakeri-Te Tcko and Ohopc Beach Roads have been patched with rock, Luttrell'.s Ford repaired and Soutar's Bridge approaches filled in. Damage of a more serious nature was narrowly averted and on the whole it can be said that the district escaped comparatively lightly.
