THE BOYS BAND
WITH the second anniversary of the Whakatane Boys Band and the proven fact that the organisation and training of such a body of boys by the late Mr Harry Mayo, was no flash-in-the-pan, but a movement which bears all the earmarks of permanency, Whakatane citizens may well feel proud of this singular achievement. It is not known possil> ly, that the Boys Band of this town ranks with only two or three other similar organisations in the province. In most instances when bands began to disintegrate owing to the inroads upon their personnel, due to military servi.ee, they were simply allowed to disappear. Dozens of provincial towns have the same story to tell and in looking back we can-think ourselves fortunate that we: had in our midst a gifted citizen who was capable and willing to step in and fill the breach by training up a complete new band composed entirely of boys.
