BEACON OF THE FUTURE

TO-DAY will mark the last issue of the BEACON as a triweekly paper, until such time as stocks and war conditions permit of a return to the status which has found so much favour in the past. Next issue will be on Tuesday, October 6th, and the subsequent issue for that week on Friday, October 9th. This will be the basis of the bi-weekly service which the Directorate has been reluctantly compelled to adopt in the face of seriously dwindling stocks and the impossibility of being* able to find a guarantee of future supplies coming to hand. As stated previously we take a certain pride in the fact that Whakatane's paper was one of the last to cut down, and can assure our readers that we deplore the necessity. The decision to maintain the same size of the paper, was dictated, by a desire to maintain as long as possible the same volume of local news as has been served our subscribers in the past. A re-arrangement of layout will enable the elimination of reprint and national articles, in favour of the local items which we realise constitute the type of news most welcomed by our readers. The concentration on but two issues in the week will enable us to do this with the limited staff at our disposal, to a far greater extent, than in the past. In view of this and also the fact that we have refrained from any war-time advertising or sales increases,, the subscription rates will remain the same but an adjustment will be made on all contract advertisement rates. It is hoped that our readers will bear with us in these difficult times apd hasten once: again to reassure them of an immediate return to a normal basis at the first sign of guaranteed supplies and a more adequate staff.
