EXPLANATION OF THE POSITION

"All Maoris, under the age groups called to register, are liable to prosecution if they have failed to do so," stated Mr R. W. Chappell, Paeroa Manpower Officer.- Mr Chappell was referring to the question whether Maoris may be directed to essential work.

"The position is that, while Maoris are not liable for military service, they are, nevertheless members of the 1 general reserve, and may therefore be directed to undertake employment of National importance." explained Mr Chappell.
