BLOW TO JUVENILES
PENNY STICKS ALMOST EXTINCT
The day of the penny stick of lolly has gone, at least for the period of the war; perhaps for good. The recent sales tax increases 011 sweets added a halfpenny to most lines, so for the youngster who goes to the store now to do the odd messages for his mother, it is no longer a question of "a penny from the change," but a l%cl. Shopkeepers do not report any decrease in business as a result, apart from that brought about by stock shortages, but their coppercoin spending juvenile customers are now deliberating about their choices almost as carefully as a woman buying a hat. The adult generation will remember when the lolly sticks were a halfpenny. Thus, the cost to mothers of the little extra inducement that makes all the difference between a message smartly done and one where they wonder if their messenger is ever coming back, is now three times its old-time level.
