CHAOS CAUSED
ARMY REFUSES TO RELEASE MEN
[ "The refusal of' army commanders to release for l'arm Avork men l'or whom leave has been recommended by an armed forces appeal board is causing chaotic conditions in Southland," declared the secretary of the Southland Council of Primary Production, Mr C. L. Adamson. A large number of requests for the release of men for urgent farm work had received earnest consideration from the board, he said, and recommendations had been sent forward to tlie- Army Department, but a number of, replies had been received that the men nominated were not available,,while in other cases army commanders appeared, tobe disregarding the recommendations. Mr Adamson said fanners had been urged, to grow large areas of certain -crops and had been assured-' that the necessary labour would bes available, but at a time when that, labour was urgently needed 'the Army Department refused to release essential men from camp. The. position simply was that farmers would, not be able to grow crops, and production would sutler.
