IMPRISONMENT FOR MAORI

A COWARDLY ATTACK

A Maori named John Pirihi appeared before Mr G. A. BrabanL and J„ C». Mul hoi land, J.P.'s at the Magistrate's Court on Monday charged with assaulting his wife, Margaret Pirihi, by violently throwing her against a concrete wall and kicking her while she was lying on the ground. Sergeant Farrell stated that the assault to oik place on the corner near the Commercial Hotel at 11 p.m. on Saturday night and some boarders from the hotel went to investigate and found the woman lying on the ground and the defendant kicking her. She was taken in to the domestic quarters ol the hotol and attended to and later sent by taxi to relatives.

The defendant who pleaded guilty was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the local Police Gaol.

Tlic Bcnch intimated that there was too much of this assault crime going on and the next charge would

be dealt with more severely.
