A SINISTER CHALLENGE

WHEN a section of the community, operating a protected industry, covered by the most liberal awards to industrial workers, shielded by an indulgent Government and exempted from military service—when, we say, such a section is able in the face of a country's dire peril, to throw out of gear,, the whole of our haulage system, and dislocate industry to a degree that has never before been known, then we say, that the men comprising this section can only be classed as straight out sabateurs. Thus we have the picture of New Zealand's coal miners slaving the meaning of socialism and dragging down the interpretation of democracy to the dust of their own slag heaps. Actions such as theirs give birth to dictatorships and lead to the desperate hope that being unable to govern ourselves, there will arise some person strong and firm enough to deal with the position as it should be dealt with without perpetual resource to appeal andi the mechanism of red tape. Either this or the suspension of unionism for the duration of the war.
