FLOOD DAMAGE
WASHOUTS AT TE WHAITI
WILSON'S MILL CLOSES DOWN
Though all roads are now j)assable it is reported that extensive damage Mas done by the Whirinaki Stream, a tributary to the Rangitaiki river, when it left its banks on Thursday and inundated the surrounding countryside. The Muru-para-Te Whaiti road suffered to the greatest extent but this being q P.W.D. thoroughfare the work of repair will not fall upon the Whakatane County. It is estimated that the clearing alone .on this roadway will occupy months.
Te Whaiti residents declare that the flood waters were the highest on record, in one place being J Oft over the main access roadway. The water on Friday went through Wilson's mill flooding the machinery and throwing the plant out of action. All work has been at a standstill since but, it is anticipated that cutting will be resumed early next week. Cuts through the slips have made all roads passable and normal transport services are now operating.
