Maize Plucking Machines At a meeting of the Gisborne Primary Production Council held in the Cook County County Chambers last week, advice was received from the Department of Agriculture, in reply to a request from Gisborne to permit the entry of maize plucking machines because of the shortage of labour, stating that some machines were on order from the United States and were expected in New Zealand before the next picking season. A maize-picking machine was used in the Gisborne district about the year 1910 but was then not considered a success. This machine required six horses to pull it through the maize. The machine was of little use in maize that had been blown out and even where the maize was upright the paddock had to be gone over and stray cobs plucked by hand. The cobs were carried by elevator to drays which then carted the cobs to the crib. With larger 1 tyres and the use of a tractor, the latest models should be able to pluck a big area in one day.
