WIDESPREAD FLOODING

WHAKATANE RIVER RISES LAIUJE AREAS SUBMERGED Huntfreds of acres adjoining the Whakatane River are now under water as a result of the flooding following yesterday's 2*4 inches of rain. Reports from Eidgecumbe indicate that the Rangitaiki and Tarawera rivers are also rising and that although floods are feared, nothing of any consequence has occurred as} y&t.

The Waimana which is also in heavy spate lias flooded much of the flat land in that district and the Gorge provides a turbulant and angry sight.. Low-lying land between Whakatane and Taneatua was encroached upon yesterday afternoon when farmers commenced moving their stock to higher levels. During the night it is estimated with the assistance of the tide that the river rose over ten feet. By 7.30 p.m. the road to Taneaua was impassable but as the title' subsided the water rcceeded. sufficiently to clear the surface once more. There has been no loss of stock reported as yet. but it is anticipated that there will be considerable damage from washouts and logs when the floods go down. More rain which is threatening, would seem 'to indicate still further rising on the part of the three rivers serving the Plains v but particularly the Tarawera. j
