ASSAULT CHARGE
YOUNG MAORI FINED
GIVEN A CHANCE
A young Maori Hi Hoana, of Poroporo, appeared before Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. G. Mulho'lland in the Whakatane Police Court last Monday -pleading guilty to a charge •of assault. Mr B. S. Barry defends *ed.
Sergeant Farrell said that accused and his wife lived with, his grandmother at Poroporo. Some time ago b Mrs Hahaki came also to live, with ; the family and it was from that point onwards that the trouble started. On one occasion accused had been fined by the Maori Council £3 for strking Mrs Hahaki and last Friday evening in the course of an argument . with his grandmother, Mrs Hahaki came between the two and accused struck her in Ahe face. Mr Barry in pleading guilty pointed out that it was trivial and that had it not been for the woman's interference nothing would have happened. The Bench decided in view of the circumstances to impose a minimum fine of £2 on condition accused took steps to leave his grandmother's residence.
