GIRL GUIDE TROOP
FIRST YEARS ACTIVITIES
CQMMI SS IO N EIl'S KEY LEW
In her report to the first annual meeting of the Whakatane Girl Guide Troop, the District Commissioner, Mrs P. R. Gartshore, covered the activities, of this growing local movement setting out a remarkable record of expansion and development. The report reads:— In spite of adverse conditions I feel our first year of the Guides xYssociation has been quite satisfactory. During the year I have visited Te Tcko five times and Paroa ten. Both these school companies are keeping up their number of Guides. Paroa has no Brownies at present but as soon as there is someone to take them over they will begin. The Whakatane Company has made very good progress under Captain Allen and Lieutenants Armstrong and Reardon assisting. Unfortunately Capt Allen left the district when she was married 1 . I have full confidence 1 in Lieut's Armstrong and Reardon carrying on the company satisfactorily by dividing the work. Brownie Pack (is growing rapidly under Brown Owl Riamson and T'awney Owl Henry. These officers have worked very well. Miss Ina Quigg has been assisting them as Pack Leader.
A collection of clean waste rag was held, for the Navy and was quite satisfactorj'. The girls have been working on camouflage nets but this has not been up to expectations as only three nets have been passed in so far. The collection of ergot was quite satisfactory over 12ozs being passed in. A paper drive was organised for funds for Trefoil Huts and with a social evening held in the Parish Hall arranged, by the company the sum of £9 was forwarded to Headquarters. Paroa and Whakatane took part in the Anzac Parade. Church parade at the Presbyterian Church was attended by most of' the Whakatane Company. Five pounds was donated by the committee for Merchant Service funds. The committee held a successful stall in town and at Mrs Searle's residence for committee funds and my proposed visit to Commissioner's conference which was later postponed on account of the war situation. The sum of £18 7s 6d was raised. A jolly tea party was given at. the end of last year for the Whakatane Company by the committee. After extensive enquiries have been made for the original Whakatane Guide flag it. is now learned that it has been passed into Headquarters. W T e are unable so far to procure another (lag but our name is on the waiting list. I wish to thank Mrs Shapley for her donation towards a flag.
.During the year we have lost two of our committee, Mrs Searle, our president, and Mrs Farmer, both of whom have gone to reside in le Puke. F would like to take this opportunity of expressing the appreciation of the committee for the splendid help Mrs Searle has given us. Miss Whiteside resigned from the secretaryship owing to illhealth, the position then being filled by Mrs Runciman. Both these ladies have done splendid work.
The balance sheet which was read and adopted showed subscriptions amounting to £(> 18s, and a credit balance in the bank of £16 lis.
