SERGT BERNARD HUGHES
PROMISING NUKUHOU MAN
News of the death in action of Sergt Bernard (Bernje) Hughes, of Nukuhou North, came as a shock to all whc knew this promising young mian. Born in 1914 and the only child of Mr and Mrs Jack Hughes, of Opotiki, this young man was educated at Victoria. High School South Africa, where he spent his youth. Coming to New Zealand with hils parents he settled first at Opotiki and on completing his education worked for 13 years on the farm of Mr Norman Clark of Nukuhou North. He enlisted early in the war and 1 left these shores 18 months ago. He fell in the heroic stand made by the combined colonial force which halted Rommel's great thrust into Egypt two months ago. He will be missed by a wide circle of friendis and 1 the greatest sympathy will be extended to 1 his parents, wife and two young children.
