Thoughtless Horsemen Residents complain that certain members of the Heme Guard Mounted troop deliberately ride their horses along ths cultivated sidewalks of' the footpaths, where in many instances there are well-kept stretches of lawn. Animals on Streets

If reports give any indication of the true position, figures •would tend to show that the residents of Wliakatane are more law-abiding than Opotiki residents as far as stock laws are concerned. Compared with the huge total of animals claimed from the inspector and impounded in the last, two or three months in Opotiki, the Whakatane ranger only managed to collect two cows and a yearling hull from the Wliakatane borough, which is about double the area of Opotiki borough. However, following the stiff fines imposed on offenders at the last sitting of the Opotiki Magistrate's Court., there has already been a marked improvement in this town. A day or two following the sitting of the Court, the inspector remarked to a News representative 'that it was a welcome change to go about the borough and find no wandering stock. —Opotiki News.
