WAR-TIME DIFFICULTY
GISBORNEi-AUGKLAND MAIL
DISCONTINUANCE LIKELY
The prospects of being unable to maintain the running of the mail lorries betAveen Gisborne and the railhead at Tancatua have been discussed in Gisborne recently, it is underwood. Great difficulty in obtaining tyres lias resulted in the cutting down of many services throughout the Dominion recently to an even more drastic form than was necessary when the petrol rationing came into force, and it is believed that, if this service is not discontinued almost immediately, it cannot remain for -a great length of time. Those who support its discontinuance point out that the night mail through Napier Avill connect AA'ith 'the Limited Express from Wellington and reach Auckland at 7 a..m., this being ample time to connect aa ith the postal deliA r eries. At present, the mail to the north arrives Auckland at 6 p.m. on the day after posting, and at that time is of no value to< business, people, ex-cept a feAA r aa'lio might clear their private boxes after that hour. .therefore, it is argued, the extra night taken, in travel aa*ill not be of any general inconvenience either to private or business people. Also, it is not thought that there Avill be any inconvenience to places along the route of the present nortlnvards mail run, for alternative methods "will be found, no doubt, to carry the much lighter mail necessary.— Gisborne Herald.
