POWER POLE COLLAPSES SHORT CIRCUIT OPERATES SIREN The fire siren was probably responsible for officially commencing the day for most Whakataneans, when at exactly (5.3 a.m. it blared forth its insistent announcement and called forth many blinking and enquiring sleepy heads into the grey dawn. The alarm however was'caused by the collapse the power poles in Commerce Street which in falling brought about a short circuit which automatically set the alarm oft'. Repairs to the lines are now in hand.
