WAGES INCREASE

Coincident with the increase in the pricc of butterfat which dairy farmers, will receive from August 1, the wages of their employees are also to be increased. The increase in the price of butterfat for buttermaking was .6d a pound- and fo r r cheesemaking .74d. The new wage-order provides thai from August 1 the farm emp'ovee. if he is over 21 years of age, wili receive an additional 5s a week as a minimum, making his minimum wceikly wage £2 17s (id. Provision is also made for the following increases in the cases of workers under 21 years: 17 years, 2s, making the minimum wage £1 2s; between 17-'lB years, 2s (id, minimum £1 9s; between 18-19 years, 3s, minimum j £1 16s: between 19-20 years, 4sJ minimum £2 3s (id; between 20-21 years, 4s (id, minimum £2 10s Gd. In each case £1 a week extra must be paid the employee if the employer tloes not provide board and , lodging. It is pointed out that in most cases the farm employee is already receiving above the minimum Avage, but it is considered that even in such cases the dairy farmer, though not legally compelled to do so, will meet the position by granting the additional amount as provided in the wage order.
