OBITUARY
MR H. W. J. MUSCUTT
The death occurred on Thursday morning of Mr Henry W. J. Muscutt, a well known and highly respected resident of Whakatane for over 30 years. He will be particularly known to older residents who will recall his active participation in town affairs before he went into senai-retirement at Kopeopeo some years ago. Born, in Poplar, London, 80 years ago he left England as a young man to try life in the colonies. The voyage out was made in the vessel "British Queen" in the year 1884. He first opened a saddlery business in Woodville, ami later moved to Weber, in Hawke\s Bay. In this town he was appointed a J.P. and his 14 years residence , there was marked by many local activities in which he figured prominently. He was chairman of the School Committee for 9 years and was also' Town Librarian for 7 years. In 1912 he came to Whakatane setting up in his trade and building a well known and substantial business. He saw the gradual development of the town from its. early stages of transition and was a popular figure with town and country residents. He was a great worker and also local observer for the Government Meteorological Department. * Honest to a degree lie will be missed by <t wide circle of friends and the greatest sympathy will be felt for his family. He is survived by his wife and two 1 daughters Miesdames Charteris (Gisborne) and Bush (Whakatane). There are six grand-children and ! one great grandchild.
