STOLEN POULTRY
TE TEKO MAORI SENTENCED INCIDENT LAST DECEMBER Rau Pakeha a native of Te Teko pleaded guilty in the Whakatane Court yesterday to a charge of theft of poultry committed as far back as December 23 last. Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. King, J.P's were on the bench. Sergeant Farrell said that Ihe tie-/ fcndant had been interviewed subsequent to a statement made by another Maori defendant in connection with another ease. The statement alleged that Pakeha had been seen with a sack full of liens which he openly boasted had been removed from Mr Robert Glen's: runs. Mr Glen who was a storekeeper at Te Teko had been the victim of many raids on his poultry and estimated that over 200 had been taken during the past two years. The raiders had broken the locks time and again. The defendant was alleged at the time of his offence to have had lavo other natives with him who would be interviewed later. In convicting and sentencing Pakeha to a month's imprisonment, the bench observed that he was obviously bent on theft. The next culprits who came before the court charged on a similar offence would be given a longer term.
