TANEATUA HALL

COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION HINT OF A 'BREEZE' What might have developed into a violent clash of views arose from an incident at the • last meeting of the Whakatasne County Council when Cr C. McCready mentioned the growing use of the Taneatua Hall by the local unit of the Home Guard.

Cr McCreadj' said that Avhen the Home Guard first applied for the use of the hall it had been agreed to make the building available one night per week free of charge, providing the occasion did not clash with revenue engagements. Now however the guard were using it on jnore occasions* and also encroaching the main hall as well as the supper room. Cr McCready added that jie did not wish to disturb the guard but some understanding should be arrived at as the cost of lighting was going up and the seats were beiing utilised.

The chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) saicl that it only remained for the Hall Committee to make a small charge to offset the lighting.

Cr MciGougan: There may be quite a lot in what Cr McCready says but the 1 Hall Committee should be dealing with this not the council. No one knows what the Hall Committee does, except perhaps two ol them. I'm on the committee and I don't know anything of this.

Cr McCready: Cr MeGougan's memory is short. It has been handled Joy the committee and it is his re-> commendation to which I'm speaking. i don't come here to miss-stats facts. We want to get down to mi -understanding. Cr MeGougan: Who's we? Cr McCready: WeI—l'm1 —I'm speaking for those who met the other evening and asked me to get a ruling on the point. If Cr MeGougan is asking for trouble, I'll give it to him. -He then explained that some of ! lie ladies had recently asked him to go into the'matter with the council. The Home Guard had varied their .arrangement, without consulting the caretaker or any member of the

.committee. 'The chairman said the matter v."as ■one for the Hall Committee to confer with the Home Guard upon. If at was necessary to make any variation in the terms of the lea.se it could then be addressed to the coun.cil. In answer to the chairman's qucs''tion Gr McCready said lie was chairman and merely wanted the matter straightened out.

Cr McGougan: There's no need for all this if you only wont the proper way about it.

• Cr McCready said he diid not desire any misunderstanding, or appear to raise any 'dust' in the press but it was necessary to get to a reasonable basis.

Cr MaGougan: The whole thing can be easily agreed to. and fixed up at Taneatua.
