CEMETERY SURVEY

COUNTY AND BOROUGH

OFFICERS SERVICES NEEDED

Writing to the Whakatane County Council yesterday the town clerk (Mr D. V. Saunders) pointed out that the arrangement suggested on 24th June would involve the Borough Council in substantial additional expenditure Avhich should have been capable of being avoided. The instructions to the County Engineer and the Borough Foreman-Kngincer to proceed with the preparation of the cemetery scheme plan were given as long ago as November 1940 by agreement between both bodies: and before war conditions presented any difficulties in this connection.

Tlie Borough Foreman-Engineer had since then been available to proceed with the Avork, but ■although approached the County Engineer was apparently unable to make the opportunity. At the present time the Borough Council was similarly prepared to complete its side of the arrangement and accordingly did not consider it should contribute towards the services of an outside employee. It was suggested that the County Council might reconsider the position respecting the services of Mr Tcmkins, and that failing his services being available, that the County Council should engage some competent person to proceed in his place in the preparation of the scheme plan in conjunction with Mr Henderson. As considerable time has already elapsed, in bring- 1 ing the matter to finality, the council's urgent attention was requested.

The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, stated that the matter was discussed Avith a Borough committee comprising His Worship the Mayor and Crs Canning and Cummings, and it was finally resolved that application be made to the Army for a week's leave, preferably at the beginning

of October, for Captain Brebner, to enable him to undertake the cemetery survey.
