PETROL COUPONS

.«, TRANSFER NOT ILLEGAL DECISION OF MAGISTRATE The transfer of petrol coupons is not illegal, according to a reserved judgment delivered in Stratford last week by Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M. The decision is believed to be the first in New Zealand on the point and legalises the practice of giving petrol coupons to persons other than those to whom they were issued. A. T. Gallie, of Mahoe, who bought petrol with coupons he had received from another person, was charged with tendering them to a vendor when he was not entitled to their possession. The charge was dismissed. "The purpose of the regulations is to conserve oil fuel," said the magistrate. "Although coupons may be issued only to the owner and in respect of a vehicle there is no prohibition against transferring them. Oil fuel may be sold to a 'holder:' of coupons and the regulations do not require him to be issued with them. There is nothing on the coupons to show they have been issued to a person or in respect of a vehicle." The above will have a widespread interest in this district in view of the long distances which must be traversed by rural dwellers in order to reach town.
