RUBBISH ABLAZE

MIDNIGHT FIRE ALARM

FLAMES QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED

Whakatane was rudely awakened in the early hours of Saturday morning by the prolonged wail of the fire siren. As a result the brigariesmen dashing the sleep from their eyes set to and upon rushing to investigate found that the outbreak that had roused them from their dreams was little more than a box of bish in the rear of the Para Rubber premises on the Strand.

The fire had done little damage other than to lick the adjoining posts of an outbuilding, but bad it not been discovered might easily have attained dangerous proportions.
