HEAVY FROSTS
SEVERE ON THE PLAINS
With the cessation of the brief period of rain at the opening of the present month, the district has experienced a return of the intense frosts which ran on for three consecutive weeks in June. Yesterday morning's visitation was the most severe to date, registering" 9.5 degrees in Whakatanc, and even lower temperatures out on the plains where the countryside appeared as after a heavy fall of (snow. This morning's frost was lighter owing to a clouded sky formation taking place about 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. However some 6 degrees were recorded which is considered high enough for this area. It is obvious now that the present year will be regarded as an outstanding one for winter frosts, which usually forshadow an excellent growth of pasture in the spring.
