SCHOOL GAMES

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL TAURANGA TEAM'S VISIT On Saturday last teams from Tauranga met those of the Whakatane District High School in friendly games of basketball and football. The Opotiki senior Jifteen also met that of Tauranga in the star game here. Altogether a train load of 9<> made the journey from Tauranga, and an enjoyable day in perfect weather was spent. The visitors were given morning and afternoon tea, capably served under the direction of the teachers, assisted by the senior girls. The following are the results of the games:— Basketball Senior: Tauranga 9, Whakatane IS. Junior: Tauranga 9, Whakatane (i. Primary: Tauranga 26, Whakatane 11. Football Senior Secondary-: Tauranga 17, Opotiki 3. This game was played at a fast pace throughout, and good football was seen, honours going to the Tauranga backs, two of whom to catch ! the eye were Cooney the half, and Smith the centre. Tries were scored for Tauranga by Burke (2), Smith, Wells and Barraclough, one being converted. For Opotiki Collyer kicked a penalty. Secondary (under 9st 71b): A splendid game—the advantage being with Whakatane, whose backs showed to advantage, and the writer is not going to single any out for special mention. The game ended 20 nil in Whakatane's favour. Tries were scored by Henderson (2),, Goodall, Rutherford and Rivett—the lat-> ter converting one and kicking a

penalty. The Primary game ended in a draw. Tauranga had the better of the game; hut the hard working Whakatane forwards managed to prevent them crossing their line. All three games were capably controlled by members of the local Referees' Association —Messrs Darvill, Boswell and Whitehead. To them, thanks are due.
