POLITICAL UNITY

THE prolonged wrestling match between the Government and the Opposition relative to the formation of a coalition of both parties for the duration of the war found welcome finality when a War Cabinet of thirteen was set up earlier in the week. The result must make for a better state of understanding, a curtailment of the useless and vindictive cross-talk of which listeners-in are so heartily tired of and an example to the country generally as far as co-operative war effort is concerned. The only pity of it all is that it was not seen fit to introduce the idea long ago, in order to save the dissatisfaction, and criticism which the continued party control evoked. The fact that the life of the combined Government is extended till twelve months after the restoration of peace is another feature which must meet with full approval, for it will ensure that the vital work of rehabilitation will be shared by both parties thus, enabling an equitable and reasonable policy to be adopted.
