THEFT BY YOUNG MAORI HANDS IN SHOP TILL A particularly brazen theft occurred last Saturday in the restaurant known as the Regent Cafe, of which Mr P. Coutts is proprietor. A young Maori Hakai Pieta (alias Sharkey) entered the shop and thinking that it was unattended proceeded to reach across the counter and help himself from the till. He was discovered by a young lady attendant who happened to hear the till ring as it was opened. Pieta was apprehended in the act and held till the police arrived a few minutes later. The accused appeared before Messrs G. Brabant and J. G. Mulholland and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to one month's, imprisonment.
