Hospital Member Appointed To lill the vacancy occurring on the Whakatane Hospital Board, as a result of Mr R. W." Schotield's resignation, the County Council at its meeting yesterday appointed Mr C. H. McCready to the Board. Cook Guard Over Strength Replying to a question at the Cook County Council's meeting last week, Mr R. Graham, commander of the Cook County Battalion of the Home Guard, stated that no compulsion was required to secure men for the Home Guard in the Cook County. The county clerk, Mr F. T. Robertson, said that the county unit was, over strength, and some of the men were required for the E.P.S. services. Scouts Pass Cooking Test Nine members of the Whakatane Scout troop successfully passed their cooking test last Saturday. The boys were required to light their own fires with one match, and cook thereon a stew with suitable vegetables. Scout Neil Muir was first to complete the test, with Scout Barry Thomas a close second. The Scouts generally displayed a good general knowledge of cooking and it was pleasing to note one tripod Fire amongst so many of the ordinary suspension bar type. The boys who carried out the test were as under: Scouts. Neil Muir, Barry Thomas, Rex Morpeth, lan Searle, Sydney Shapley, Bruce Thomas, Douglas Searle, Ross Muir and John Taylor. Proposed Local Bodies Assn. At the meeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday the clerk (Mr C. G. Lucas) reported that replies had been received from the Rotorua Borough, Mt. Maunganui ! Town Board, Rotorua County, Whakatane Borough and Tauranga County in regard to the proposed Local I Bodies Association. The first three J bodies expressed willingness to join | in the formation of a Bay of Plenty and Rotorua Local Authorities' Association. Whakatane Borough Council advised that it did not see the necessity for the establishment of such an association, and Tauranga County advised that it is not prepared at the moment to participate and the matter was held in abeylance. J Timber Road Rate The manager of Messrs. Geo. Syme and Co., writing the County Council yesterday stated that the reason why the timber road rate had not been paid for the six-monthly period from Ist October 1941, to 31st March !94G, Avas that in consequence of the restriction of private building and of the taking of practically the whole of the mill output by the Timber Controller for urgent defence priority orders, the amount of SII2II rate did not cover the amount of the heavy traffic fees, which the company was entitled to deduct therefrom. Actual figures for timber sold other than that dispatched by rail—during the six month period amount to 175,859 super feet, which at 2d per 100 feet super amounted to £14 13s 2d, while heavy traffic fees for the same period amounted to> £15 6s. A copy of the council's letter under reply had been forwarded to the Governing Director for his comments, or action, and the council would be advised whe-n a reply had been received.
