SCHOOL BOY RUGBY

Shortest Day Although the shortest day is usually -considered to i'all on either the 22nd or 23rd of June, the sun appears to act in a peculiar way at this time of tiie .year. To-tlay the sun will continue to rise later each day until the 9th of July, Avhen it will commence to rise earlier, and at quite a noticeable difference each morning. Although the sun will rise later until July 9th the time of setting will give an increase.in the length of sunshine each day from the 23rd of June.

IF there: no longer exists the usual avenues for giving vent to our inborn Rugby enthusiasm we can at least do our bit towards fostering* the grand old game amongst the school boys of Whakatane,, who will in years to come play a representative part in providing the Rugby-mindedness of the district. On August 24th next it is hoped to be able to stage in Whakatane the school-boy football tournament for the Tai Mitchell Shield. Teams are expected from Opotiki, Rotorua, Tauranga and Matamata and the whole competition depends entirely upon Whakatane's ability to accommodate the boys of the visiting teams. Residents who would be willing to lend a hand in this respect are asked to get in touch with the local Headmaster—if possible before Friday next.

That Hospital Levy Writing the Whakatane County Council regarding the recent local authorities conference at Whakatane v.-Jien a combined elfort was; made to draw the Government's attention to the growing incidence of the hospital rate Mr F. W. Doitlge, M.P., stated that the material would be of value when Parliament meets shortly. He offered congratulaions on. the success of the conference, which he stated, was supremely business-like, and the nature of its personnel lifted one*s hopes in the quality and future of local government.
