RACING NOTES

NEW ZEALAND ENTRANT

The throe year old Battle Dress, winner of the N.Z. Derby, has been entered for the Melbourne and Caulfield Gups. He has performed like a stayer this season for he got two miles in the Wellington Cup in January, as runner-lip to Happy Ending. FOXBRIDGE ON TOP Foxbridge, champion stallion last season, is assured of being head of the list again this term. With only! six weeks to go to the end of the season, he is credited with stakewinnings almost double those of the second stallion on the list. The twelve leading sires up till the end of May arc as follows: Foxbridge, £20,623; Beau Pere, £10,481; Vaals, £9886'; Surveyor, £7790; Bulandshar. £7625; Hunting Song, £7450; Salmagundi, £7095; Iliad, £6386; Posterity, £6232; Paper Money, £5268; Phalcron Bay, £5192; Autopay, £5191. HIS TURN WILL COME Among the jumpers seen out at the Great Northern meeting, one likely to see a better day is Selwyn. The son of Lurina ran two solid races, but was a shade on the burly side, and he is worth keeping in mind. When at liis best Selwyn will not be hard to place to advantage in cross-country events.

SOUTHERN TRIP IN VIEW Sir Cameron and Skyway are to be nominated for the Manawatu and Wellington winter meetings. I. Tucker lias both these horses in first rate order, and they should pay their way on the southern trip. Sir Cameron ran a good race to finish just behind the placed horses in the York Handicap, and may soon reach the winning list. SHOULD PAY EXPENSES By finishing third in the Orakei Hurdles at Ellerslie, Classic's effort indicated an early success over the battens. I. Tucker has the Surveyor gelding in great heart, and will take this jumper to the Manawatu and Wellington meetings. As Classic can handle soft going, lie should pay expenses down south. DEATH OF GREAT NIGHT The local owner-trainer J. D. King had a bit of bad luck during the week, losing his six year old mare Great Night. By Nightmarch from Bonny Dawn, a daughter of Greenback, sire of Paper Money. Great Night was fashionably bred, and was actually bought with the idea of being used for breeding purposes.

FIELDS FOR TRENTHAM

The nominations for the Wellington meeting where restrictions in the number of starters arc to be enforced, are not as large as expected, so "the cuts" will not be very severe. Seventeen nominations have been received for the Wellington Steeplechas, -which is Avell within the safety limit but eliminations will have to be made for the Whyte and Members" Handicaps on the first day the racing on which will assuredly thin out the fields automatically for the second seven days later.

COME INTO PROMINENCE An Auckland trainer who has come into prominence this season is D. Arnott, who has scored meritorious successes with Landveyor. Bronzo and Grandora. "Nothing succeeds like success" and he lias just added to his team Lord Defoe, a half-sister to Bronzo and a half-bro-ther to Landveyor. SLAYER FOR TRENTHAM the best South Island steeplechaser in active commission is the Valkyan representative. Slayer, who lias already shown good winter form. He will be one of the leading fancies for the Wellington meeting. WILDORE AS A HURDLER

It is understood that Wild ore is to join the ianks of hurdlers. At the Auckland winter fixture he had an essay over the battens, but toppled over during the running. This, however, is all in the course of education, and it may l*e taken for granted that his trainer, It. H. Townsend, will have liini properly schooled over the obstacles before many weeks arc over.
