WHAKATANE MEETING The June meeting of the AVliakatane Women's Institute was held recently in the Methodist Hal!, Mrs Cairns presiding. .Mrs Dewar gave a short address on first aid in an emergency.. The meeting opened with the singing of the institute song and the reading of the motto for the day. Two pamphlets from Prisoners of War Relatives Association were passed, round among members. Nine camouflage nets were reported to be completed, and 106' skeins of wool have been drawn for knitting for the forces. On behalf of the Institute Mrs SutclifTe presented Mrs Larsen, ay ho is leaving the district, w r ith an Institute spoon and a shoulder spray in appreciation of her willing, and consistent services. Mrs Larsen briefly responded. The roll call, consisting of extracts read from servicemen's letters, was responded to by several members. Mrs Norman (lemons'rated the making of a soldier's hussif and showed the finished article. Mrs SutclifTe .showed members how to make children's sox from old stockings, and also displayed the items included in soldier's parcels. Two new members were proposed. Following afternoon tea, a community sing of war songs was heldA display of gifts: and souvenirs from members of forces proved very interesting. Knitting for servicemen was also on view. Competitions were won as follows: Shortbread, Mrs Grozier 1, Mrs Young 2. Carrots, Mrs Grose. Mrs Sisam gave some helpful advice to competitors. The meeting closed with the New Zealand National Anthem.
