A captive watched the parental zest Of swallows busily building their nest — Nealh the rugged arch of his window high— Through the bars of which he could see the sky. He's passionate longing to be freePrompted a pathetic soliloquy. Oh that sweet liberty were mineTo fly far hence 011 wings like thine — That which a prison is to me— Is but a chosen home to thee. The freedom of creatures men term wild — Ts the heritage of nature's primeval child— That has kept instinctively true to typeSince Eden's fatal fruit was ripe— That tempted Eve, caused Adam's fallAmi bequeathed a birthmark to us all. The harmonious choir of the feathered throng—Still sings old Eden's evensong— Humans alone have gone astray — From Eden's gate to yesterday. Naked man -comes, naked departs — Exposed through life, to the venemed darts — Of passion and envy, lust and prideHence the present fearful homocide. But the sword will be sheathed and drawn no more — To slain Mother Earth with her ch'vilren's gore— and Holy Charity Wi- .mankind eventually— Ilea "iT torn fields with golden 1 gri.ii* J' ' Cause t' seen' oif peace to shine again • O'er a world reformed, reelothed I and sane. 1 H.
