These Freezing Mornings
Whakatane residents who hug the blankets till 7 and 8 a.m. these chilly mornings should give, thought to the maize pickers in the country many of whom commence work at ■>.■lO a.m. As the. bulk of the pickers are now Maori women it will be appreciated the, hardiness which is necessary to earry out the work under such conditions. From a prominent maize grower who was in town yesterday it was learnt tliaL the maize crop this year was a very poor one which led him to suppose that there would be an acute shortage next year.
